HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Department of Microbiology located at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU. 

The incumbent will provide research support in support of the bacteriology laboratory of Dr. Ann Jerse in the Department of Microbiology at the Uniformed Services University. This individual will primarily support the study of molecular mechanisms of Gonococcal Pathogenesis in female mouse models.  This individual should be able to perform bacteriological cultures, antibiotic testing and polymerase chain reactions.  The ability to work with animals is a plus.  Basic animal handing will include immunizations, collections of bio samples, injection of compounds and experimental infection.  Training can be provided but previous experience is an asset.

This Individual performs research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects, provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff, and solves less complex problems in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Makes detailed observations about experiments.
  2. Works with laboratory animals, including basic animal handling, immunizations, collection of bio samples, injection of compounds, and experimental infection.
  3. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  4. Performs research projects, including the collection and organization of data. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
  5. Performs data entry in accurate, timely, and efficient manner. Maintains clear and accurate data collection records and inventories in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  6. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and ensures proper cleanliness and sanitation in accordance with Good Clinical and/or Good Laboratory practices.
  7. Creates, collects, disseminates, and maintains appropriate study data.
  8. Assists in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols. Creates and communicates detailed observations on experiments.
  9. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques including basic bacteriological and molecular techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communization and analytical skills. Previous animal handling is desired.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required. 

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant experience required.

Work Environment: Set in a laboratory environment. 

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
