HJF is seeking an Entomologist to support the Navy and Marine Corp Public Health Center (NMCPHC) located at the Center for Medical, Agriculture, and Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE) in Gainesville, Fl. 

In a partnership with the Navy Entomology Center of Excellence, the ideal candidate will be tasked with assisting with the development, design, and evaluation of novel products and application technologies to better protect deployed forces from blood feeding insects and other arthropods that transmit human diseases. 


  1. Apply scientific method and technical skills to advance public health pesticide application technologies and techniques to control the spread of insect carried human disease. Technology shall include, but is not limited to, truck-mounted, skid-mounted, handheld and aerial equipment.
  2. Obtain technical training from subject matter experts (SMEs), as required, to attain proficiency in new pesticide application equipment technology and techniques (work with pesticide application equipment, techniques, and modification projects).
  3. Conduct laboratory rearing of insects and general laboratory duties.
  4. Assist in evaluations of vector surveillance techniques and equipment Assist in the development and evaluation of pathogen diagnostic tools Develop technical material and training manuals.
  5. Serve as instructor for informal and formal training of personnel.
  6. Initiate contact and develop cooperative relationships with governmental and non-governmental organizations associated with public health pesticide application technology and techniques aiding in the mission of the Navy Entomology Center of Excellence.  Examples of these organizations include industry, academia, professional societies and governmental entities.
  7. Prepare weekly project status and completion reports.
  8. Present project results at professional meetings, symposia, and working groups.
  9. Attend professional meetings, industry trade shows, technical/scientific symposia, and academic seminars.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Professional work experience in the field of entomological research, development, prevention, or control which included field and/or laboratory work. An understanding of pertinent insecticide chemistry, biological sciences, and public health concepts related to the control of insects that carry human diseases. Familiarity with technical and administrative requirements for project development, execution and management. Knowledge of scientific methods, and techniques concerned with public health insecticide application equipment. Demonstrated experience in project design, execution, data analysis, and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with related guidelines including various Federal and State regulations.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's Degree in Entomology or related scientific field.

Minimum Experience: 3-5 years of relevant work experience, including demonstrated experience in identification of medically important arthropods.

Work Environment: Office and laboratory environment.

Background: US Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold Department of Defense issued Secret Clearance.
