HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Surgical Critical Care Initiative (SC2i), within the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), located in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to SC2i. U.S. Citizenship and the eligibility to obtain and hold a Secret Security Clearance is required. 

The incumbent in this position will provide laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.

Responsibilites:

  1. Perform multiplexed Luminex and MSD immunoassays with the required precision and accuracy.
  2. Handle human specimens using proper precautions.
  3. Perform specimen processing and reporting of results in compliance with GCLP and CAP standards.
  4. Prepare biological reagents necessary to support development of assigned projects.
  5. Maintain impeccable records, including notebooks and computer-generated data files, quantitative analysis of data and laboratory protocols to ensure compliance with GCLP/CAP requirements.
  6. Assists in the preparation of technical reports for the group meetings, summaries, and protocols. 
  7. Assist in routine laboratory maintenance including reagent inventory, equipment qualification, instrument calibration, and adherence to safety regulations.
  8. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Experience in ELISA or other immunoassays.
  • Familiarity with proteomics and/or multi-analyte testing is preferred.
  • Strong analytical abilities required for design of experiments, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work very effectively in a team environment, and ability to function with moderate degree of independence are required.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline required.

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years’ experience required.

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

Work Environment:  The job will take place in a laboratory environment.

Background: U.S. Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold a Secret Security Clearance.
