HJF is seeking Senior Research Assistant to support PIs at the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center (Simcenter) at the USUHS, Forest Glen Annex, Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Simulation Center. 

Responsible for simulation research and development in collaboration with PIs and others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff at VGH Simcenter. Reports directly to the PIs and medical director of the VGH Simcenter. The position is located at the Womack Army Medical Center, FT Bragg, NC.


  1. Coordinates and performs simulation research projects, including collection and organization of data.  Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments.  Makes detailed observations about experiments.  Provides data analysis and interpretation.
  2. Prepares and writes technical reports, progress reports, abstracts, summaries, and protocols including submissions to IRBs. 
  3. Conducts research related literature reviews. 
  4. Prepares spaces for set up of research simulations and activities including simulators, propos, equipment and other resources necessary for simulation activities and experiments.  
  5. Maintains clear and accurate research records, inventories and logbooks.
  6. Establishes and maintains databases for research projects.
  7. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures.  Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  8. Provides quality control, trouble shooting and the maintenance of specialized supplies and equipment.
  9. Presents research findings at scientific meetings. 
  10. Participates in technical or academic training as necessary.
  11. Communicates in a positive, professional manner with faculty, students, subjects, and other users of the Simcenter. 
  12. Supervises or trains instructors, simulation staff and visiting staff as required for research project completion.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of complex simulation techniques; ability to work independently; good communication and analytical skills with all; experience in research methodology required.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.

Minimum Experience: 6 or more years’ experience in simulation research.

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various supplies and materials. 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  may supervise and provide guidance for other research support staff and medical students assisting with the study.

Work Environment:  Healthcare simulation research and operations facility.

Background/Security: Ability to obtain a CAC and a Public Trust.
