HJF is seeking PhD Distance Learning Educator to support the Distance Learning Educational Mission in the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine (SoM) located at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences including the Masters and PhD program in Health Professions Education (HPE in Bethesda, MD  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to Uniformed Services University.

Incumbent will serve in a teaching, service and research roles and, as such, will be responsible for tasks and related activity to include assisting other USU faculty with online and blended learning course design, faculty coaching and development, evaluation and research dissemination. The incumbent will be a faculty member in the Health Professions Education (HPE) Program and will spend the majority of their time mentoring and facilitating USU faculty in distance learning. The incumbent will also mentor graduate students in HPE, teach graduate level coursework and serve as a research and/or academic advisor as well as related duties. It is expected that the candidate will also prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals from the research data generated from the project(s) consistent with academic rank.


  1. Assists faculty with designing, developing and evaluating online and blended learning courses that are consistent with sound instructional design principles. 
  2. Collaborates with faculty to strengthen their online teaching pedagogy, and to prepare educational materials for teaching and other related distance learning activities. 
  3. Evaluates, researches and communicates new and emerging educational technologies and theories for blended learning with other faculty.
  4. Coaches/mentors faculty with blended learning instruction. 
  5. Serves on School of Medicine committees as assigned.
  6. Mentors HPE students and faculty. 
  7.  Assists with writing and editing of research results for dissemination within USU for program evaluation purposes as well as publication peer-reviewed journals.
  8. Teach in a course related to area(s) of expertise.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledgeable about and has experience with using educational technology in online and blended courses and in preparing faculty to teach online and blended courses.  Knowledge of organizational objectives; ability to work completely independently; ability to use sound judgment in solving problems; ability to coordinate many complex systems and programs at the same time; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, detail oriented. Shows independence and initiative in implementing departmental policies and processes related to arranging meetings, seminars and faculty schedules for regularly held events.

Minimum Education: PhD or EdD degree in educational technology, educational psychology, adult learning, or related field required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 2 or more years or more of educational research and/or teaching experience

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting;

Work Environment: Laboratory environment

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
