HJF is seeking a Biological Technician II to support the Structural Vaccinology Laboratory within the Malaria Vaccine Branch (MVB) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MVB.  


  1. Performs laboratory work in support of malaria vaccine development, including collection and organization of data. Makes detailed observations about experiments. Provides data analysis and interpretation.  
  2. Develop, troubleshoot, and perform immunological assays such as ELISA, T-cell, and Luminex Biosensor assays. Perform protein purification techniques and assist in animal work using standard protocols.
  3. Maintain mammalian cell cultures, as well as cultures of bacterial organisms.
  4. Prepares technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  5. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  6. Establishes and maintains databases for research projects.
  7. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  8. Provides quality control, trouble shooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment.
  9. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.
  10. Develop laboratory assays with assistance from supervisor.
  11. Assists with training laboratory staff and visiting scientists as required.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge in area of molecular, biochemical, malaria parasitology or immunological assays are highly desired. Knowledge of and proficiency in mammalian cell culture. Knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment. Ability to follow basic instructions; good communication and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree in the biological sciences.

Minimum Experience: 4 to 6 years laboratory experience.

Physical Capabilities: Work may involve long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals and/or hazardous biological material. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment.

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
