HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) located in Rockville, Maryland. We are seeking a doctoral-level investigator to support clinical research studies of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The candidate will be hired as a post-doctoral fellow for a 2-year period and will be eligible for an academic appointment (Instructor) in the USU Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics. The position will be hired through the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to IDCRP.
The Fellow will develop, execute, and support clinical research projects with mentorship from the HIV Natural History Study Principal Investigator (see below). It is intended that projects will be in areas related to health economics, cost-effectiveness, disability, or related topics, to characterize the impact of HIV infection in military populations with a focus toward non-AIDS outcomes such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, neurocognitive disorders, and others. Available resources will allow detailed evaluation of HIV-infected individuals, as well as comparison of HIV positive and negative populations, and DoD and VA populations. The HIV Research Area Vision is to improve long-term health, function, and readiness of HIV+ active-duty service members with benefit to all DoD HIV+ beneficiaries and more broadly.
The IDCRP HIV Research Area landmark study is the 33-year longstanding U.S. Military HIV Natural History Study (NHS). This open enrollment, prospective cohort study of military active duty and beneficiaries with HIV has enrolled over 6200 HIV+ subjects under care in the DoD with visits approximately every 6 months. A number of HIV related protocols are ongoing and hundreds of manuscripts have been published from this resource and population. The NHS is complemented by an ‘HIV Virtual Cohort Study’ of all HIV infected military beneficiaries and a large HIV negative control population using the DoD Military Health System Medical Data Repository. Additionally, we have an active collaboration with the VA in the area of comparative- /cost-effectiveness of HIV care.
The IDCRP is a collaborative research effort with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Established at USU in 2005, this unique program aims to strengthen infectious disease clinical research in the U.S. military. It brings together a network of clinical scientists at military treatment facilities who are focused on conducting patient-based research on a wide range of infectious diseases relevant to the military and the broader medical communities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: experience in the design, conduct, and analysis of epidemiologic (e.g. observational, longitudinal cohort) studies; statistical analysis of longitudinal data; SAS proficiency preferred; knowledge of biomedical science and clinical research; prior experience in infectious diseases preferred; ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form; ability to make effective presentations; publication in peer-reviewed medical journals preferred.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Doctoral degree in medicine, science, public health, epidemiology, or related field
Minimum Experience: 0-2 years’ experience

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May provide guidance to trainees or junior staff
Work Environment: Office or laboratory environment
Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
