HJF is seeking an Administrative Assistant to support the Department of Microbiology and Immunology located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

The Administrative Assistant performs a wide range of administrative and clerical duties for a department or department manager.  Work assignments may be complex in nature and moderate judgment is required in resolving problems.


  1. Sets up and maintains department files.
  2. Completes necessary paperwork for travel, procurement, and personnel.
  3. Assists with initiating, organizing, completing department projects.  
  4. Sorts and distributes mail.
  5. Performs typing assignments and proofreads all work.  Drafts letters on behalf of the supervisor.  
  6. Maintains and updates databases and spreadsheets as needed.
  7. Operates automated office equipment as needed.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.; excellent communication skills attention to details such as numbers and spelling of names, basic to intermediate level of experience with MS Office and Adobe.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associate's degree preferred

Minimum Experience:  0-2 year’s office experience

Work Environment: Office environment.
