HJF is seeking Research Assistant to support the Juliano research program within the Collaborative Health Research Initiative Program (CHIRP) at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CHIRP.

Responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with experiments and to provide support in various areas as needed.  

Responsibilities: 

  1. Performs serological tests on serum samples from laboratory animals.
  2. Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data.
  3. Uses computer for data analysis. Can use multiple types of software for data analysis and statistical tests.
  4. Prepares tissue, which includes embedding, staining, and cutting.
  5. Uses fluorescence and light microscope for collection of data and data analysis along with associated software.
  6. Performs Western Blots.
  7. Conducts behavioral tests on animals and analyzes the accumulated data with appropriate software.
  8. Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.
  9. Instructs visiting scientists and new laboratory members on experimental protocols.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

 Required Knowledge. Skills. and Abilities: Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal;

Minimum Education:  Bachelor's degree in related scientific field 

Minimum Experience:  0-2 years 

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals; requires long periods of standing 

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
