HJF is seeking a Biological Technician III/Laboratory Manager to support the Structural Vaccinology Laboratory within the Malaria Vaccine Branch (MVB) at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MVB. US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.


  1. MANGERIAL DUTIES - 60% of time        
    • Oversee and manage all aspects of technical laboratory, providing oversight in space management, personnel management, equipment and supply maintenance, and laboratory operations 
    • Maintain laboratory supplies, inventory, software and equipment to support ongoing and upcoming research needs.   Ensures that all equipment are properly maintained and calibrated and proper logs and documentation are on file.  Maintains inventory records of samples, supplies, material and equipment.
    • Direct, coordinate, and conduct personnel actions and furnishes guidance and assistance as needed.   Work with all laboratory staff and stakeholders to facilitate projects and customer needs.  Ensure productivity is monitored, making operation or staffing adjustments as necessary.
    • Writes, reviews and updates standard operating procedures to ensure laboratory compliance.  Ensure all laboratory staff are trained in laboratory procedures, safety and quality control.
    • Manage and coordinate laboratory operations including hazardous materials/waste program, employee training/certification, develop standard operating procedures
    • Identify, evaluate and present solutions to complex problems.  Work with laboratory director to develop or recommend new equipment or testing techniques to improve the lab’s capabilities
    • Upholds all policies and procedures based on current and/or future accrediting organizations.  
    • Assists in planning, development and maintenance of internal budget.  Assists in applying for funding opportunities
    • Maintains and ensures safe laboratory conditions 
  2. TECHNICAL DUTIES - 40% of time
    • Performs laboratory work in support of malaria vaccine development.  Performs immunological assays such as ELISA and T-cell assays
    • Perform protein purification techniques and assist in animal work using standard protocols 
    • Assist with analysis of data and coordinates experiments with other branches and labs within MVB/WRAIR
    • Assists with training laboratory staff and visiting scientists as required.
    • Attends trainings and meetings as needed
    • Laboratory maintenance duties as needed.
    • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines. Knowledge of laboratory and safety procedures.  Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment.  Ability to supervise and train technicians and direct work assignments. Ability to create and enforce standard operating procedures; Ability to be a self-starter and work independently; Ability to interface with investigators, vendors, research staff

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: BS in the biological sciences; MS preferred 

Minimum Experience: 4 to 6 years in chemistry, immunology, and microbiology laboratory experience. Laboratory management and flow cytometry experience preferred.

Physical Capabilities:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, sit, use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear. Work may involve long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals and/or hazardous biological material. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds. 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Oversees laboratory technicians and scientists 

Work Environment: Laboratory Environment

Background: US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required; Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
