HJF is seeking a President, HJFMRI to support HJF Medical Research International and the Executive Office located at HJF Corporate Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. 

The HJFMRI President leads the organization’s strategic plan, external relations, governance and Board relations, and a small team in advancing military medicine under the direction of the President & CEO of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF). HJFMRI supports clients' clinical efforts and medical research programs in overseas sites, with Africa currently the largest area of operations. The HJFMRI President will be tasked with managing complex relationships with military, government and civilian partner agencies, growing and diversifying project revenue, achieving operational excellence and leading key research endeavors. Significant international travel required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for building and maintaining a complex network of international relationships with US government officials, in-country government officials, sponsor and partner staff, and community leaders. Defines a brand and communications vision that is effective in growing revenue and programs for the organization, and then communicates it to external and internal stakeholders.
  2. Leads portfolio of nearly $20M in externally-funded program operations in Western Kenya, maintaining positive relationship with federal and private sponsors and oversight of lower-tier contractor and partner organizations.  Assures development and management of program operations, budgets, policies and internal controls, regulatory compliance, and effective use of resources.
  3. Advises the leaders of HJFMRI programmatic operations outside of the portfolio described in #2 above, which encompasses international military medical research organizations active in 10 countries, with more than 400 staff members and more than $50 million in external funding.
  4. Works with Board and staff to ensure the HJFMRI mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.
  5. Responsible for leading HJFMRI in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission, as defined by the Board of Directors. Responsible for communicating with the Board in a timely and accurate manner all information necessary for the Board to make informed decisions.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Transparent and high-integrity leadership
  • Experienced as a senior leader in non-profit or government organizations in the field of medical research
  • Budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Strong organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Ability to convey a vision of an organization’s strategic future to staff, Board, volunteers and donors
  • Knowledge of client relationship management and new business development with government contracts and/or cooperative agreements
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate Board members 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
  • Strong public speaking ability

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred 

Minimum Experience/Training Requirements: More than 10 years of relevant work experience 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Direct Supervisor, direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

Work Environment: Office setting. Significant international travel required.
