HJF is seeking an Epidemiologist/ Biostatistician III to support the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) located in Rockville, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to IDCRP. 

Responsibilities of the Epidemiologist/ Biostatistician III position are to provide epidemiologic and statistical support independently via consultation throughout the design, implementation and data analysis phases of studies focused on acute respiratory infection (ARI). This involves providing epidemiologic guidance and performing advanced statistical analysis on surveys, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies (e.g. observational, longitudinal cohort) and/or clinical trials, as well as laboratory studies related to ARI among US military personnel and their beneficiaries. 


  1. Contributes to discussions of study design, implementation, analyses and identifies next phases for analyses
  2. Develops Statistical Analysis Plans (SAPs), data products and analysis results for active projects; generates analysis reports and presents results effectively to PIs/collaborators and/or supervisors
  3. Prepares study design and statistical method sections in abstracts, manuscripts, grants, protocols (e.g. sample size and power calculations, randomization/stratification methods, etc.)
  4. Offers guidance on study design and statistical methodology to PIs and junior biostatisticians
  5. Performs advanced programming, using SAS MACRO/SQL, R, Stata etc. (or other relevant languages) to derive variables and to generate statistical reports
  6. Communicates with Data Coordinating Centers (DCC) to resolve any issues related to Case Report Forms (CRFs), raw/processed datasets; Identifies potential data issues from analytic queries and takes initiative to resolve the issues
  7. Demonstrates ability to multi-task and organizational skills to effectively share all documents relevant to analyses with team members  
  8. Demonstrates statistical and medical understandings to perform analyses independently 
  9. Collaborates with research leadership, internal/external PI to achieve objectives and timelines
  10. Presents poster or oral talks at scientific and/or statistical conferences
  11. Applies new statistical methods 
  12. Performs other duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in the design and analysis of epidemiologic (e.g. observational, longitudinal cohort) studies; SAS, STATA, or R proficiency required;  statistical analysis of cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, survival, and predictive models; knowledge of biomedical and clinical research; ability to communicate effectively; publication in peer-reviewed medical journals preferred; ability to make effective presentations and publish; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  MS/MPH/PhD in biostatistics or relevant majors 

Minimum Experience:  4-6+ years for MS/MPH, 0-2+ years for PhD 

Physical Capabilities:  Extended periods of sitting

Work Environment:  Office or laboratory environment
