The position will serve as a Lead Behavioral Health Specialist to support the Osseointegration Program within Orthopaedics, WR-USU Department of Surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The incumbent is responsible for providing technical expertise, guidance, and direct clinical service in the area of behavioral health for the DoD Osseointegration Program for current and future activities related to amputee treatment and combat wounded care. The candidate’s responsibilities include the coordination of clinical study participation and assuring that accurate study documentation complies with all governing regulations. The candidate will acts as a liaison with physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers and other medical providers at WRNMMC and partnering centers in order share information, capabilities, and advancements regarding current and emerging psychological issues also be involved with osseointegration patient management, data collection, and analysis. Experience working with amputee and combat wounded patients is highly desirable.

  1. Facilitates information flow between program members, clinicians, scientific directors, and the Foundation.
  2. Perform behavioral health assessments of potential Osseointegration patients.
  3. Develops, recommends and utilizes unique interviews and direct psychological assessments as well as electronic medical records reviews to evaluate the reliability and suitability of all osseointegration candidates.
  4. Determine suitability parameters and make recommendations to the Program leadership and clinicians.
  5. Oversees behavioral health evaluations and tracking of patient progress and issues that could impact successful treatment and outcomes.
  6. Scheduling, and tracking of study participants. 
  7. Educates patients about the research, their roles in the treatment, and any other vital information and acts as a mental health case manager for the patients where appropriate.
  8. Collection, management, and analysis of research data within the DoD Osseointegration Program, Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and from affiliated departments and collaborating sites.
  9. Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for organization and quality assurance of participant data.
  10. Participate in site monitoring audits, visits and meets with the study monitor as needed.
  11. Facilitates and participates in drafting future research proposals, protocols and grant applications from the DoD Osseointegration Program and its affiliated departments and collaborators.
  12. Works individually and collaboratively with other Program staff.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Have a doctoral degree from an accredited graduate program in psychology. Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Knowledge of clinical research procedures; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively and to work with individuals of all levels. The candidate should be well-organized; ability to handle multiple tasks; ability to meet deadlines of projects; ability to facilitate communication among supervisors, team members, and patients.  Experience working with and/or supervising a multidisciplinary team of behavioral health professionals.  Broad understanding of biopsychosocial aspects of patient care.  Experience working with psychological and psychiatric sequelae of medical disease and complications.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Doctoral degree from an accredited graduate program in psychology.

Minimum Experience: 10+ years’ experience working with amputees and combat veterans. Experience within the US military medical system. WRNMMC experience preferred.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting, conducting patient visits in person and by phone, and data entry.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Background Requirement:  Employee must be able to pass the WRNMMC security background process and obtain required WRNMMC credentials.
