HJF is seeking a Research Associate to support the Department of Surgery located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. Responsible for providing administrative and technical resources in order to achieve the program goals. Contacts potential study participants and maintains records.  Assists study participants in completing survey instruments, including e-questionnaires. Assists the PI in the development of study protocols in collaboration with scientific and technical staff. Assists in the preparation of scientific reports and manuscripts in collaboration with other study team members.


  1. Maintain active protocol tracking program for PI
    • Assist program in timely tracking and notification of pending submission requirements (continuing review, audit, approval, response)
    • Assist program in preparation for regulatory reviews, audits
    • Assist program in submission of data sharing agreements
  2. Assists in checking the accuracy of data and data entry to prepare for statistical support from biostatistician
    • For meeting presentations and publications
    • For audits, reviews, reports
  3. Reports on status of research activities
    • At least monthly
  4. Assists with ancillary study testing of research participants
    • Assists participants in completion of questionnaires
  5. Drafts, proofreads and edits material for publication and presentation
  6. Attend meetings in reference to research
    • WRNMMC Research roundtable
    • Research town halls
    • USU Research events
  7. Conducts internet and library searches as needed
  8. Assists in the preparation of documents for local ethical and regulatory review and approval
  • For all protocols including publication clearances
  1. Updates Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) informatics system or studies registered on as required
  2. Completes other projects as needed
    • Support for Ophthalmology residents’ projects including publication clearances, papers, and presentations


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures; ability to meet deadlines of projects; good communication and analytical skills

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Master’s degree in scientific discipline

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years of directly related research experience

Physical Capabilities:  Requires long periods of sitting and standing; handling of various chemicals

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment
