HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow II/Staff Scientist with strong career interests in cancer metabolome, lipidome, proteome and bioinformatics in cancer biology at The Uniformed Services University of the Health Science (USU)/Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR). CPDR has two locations; Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), in Bethesda, Maryland and Rockville, Maryland. This position is based out of the Rockville, Maryland location. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CPDR.

The CPDR is an Integrated Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence and part of the Murtha Cancer Center. CPDR is a comprehensive inter-disciplinary translational research program that studies prostate disease in the military health care system with key collaborating partners at WRNMMC and Joint Pathology Center (JPC). The CPDR has developed comprehensive bio-specimen banks and multi-center patient database in the past 25 years. The collaborative expertise and resources of the clinical and basic science researchers of the CPDR has led to ground-breaking discoveries which are improving early detection, prognosis and treatments for prostate disease. These achievements have propelled its reputation as one of the leading prostate disease research centers in the nation.


  1. Design, develop and execute research on discovery, validation and mechanism of metabolome, lipidome and proteome- based prognostic markers differentiating indolent or aggressive prostate cancers
  2. Developing better understanding of molecular bases of cancer mechanisms in high risk cancer groups, e.g. African Americans and emerging ethnic groups in the US
  3. Enhance discoveries leading to the development of personalized medicine for prostate cancer, e.g. ERG oncogene targeted therapy.
  4. Perform independent molecular and cancer biology experiments, which may include but not limited to the experimental and informatics analyses of multi-omics data (metabolome, lipidome, proteome, cancer genome and transcriptomes).
  5. Apply current bioinformatics approaches for analysis of multi-omics data aiming to identify and characterize novel mechanism leading to therapeutic targeting and treatment response monitoring approaches.
  6. Collaborate with cancer biologists, bioinformaticians to design and execute experiments in cell culture and animal models to validate the function of new cancer associated biomarkers.
  7. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Communicate study results to project leader and project team, including proposals for further experiments to validate key findings. Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and as an integral member of the scientific team in a multi-disciplinary bio-medical research setting.
  8. Strictly adhere to CPDR Standard Operating Procedures including keeping and maintaining accurate and detailed electronic records of all research and experiments performed, electronic inventories and central repositories.
  9. Provide research data analysis reports, explanations and alternatives in a timely manner. The incumbent may need to provide crucial experimental information upon request by the project leaders.
  10. Perform other tasks and duties related to the multi-disciplinary research team as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong knowledge and hands on experience in cancer biology, metabolome, lipidome and proteome pathways; ability to analyze and interpret data and bring new ideas and technology; ability to draft manuscripts and progress reports.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Ph.D. obtained within the past 5 years in cancer biology, molecular and cell biology or related scientific discipline. Strong track record of relevant publications.

Minimum Experience: 2-4 years of experience with related experiments in cancer biology, molecular and cell biology or related scientific discipline. Experience in multi-omics technologies, including computational biology will be desirable.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May provide guidance to research assistants and graduate and college students.

Work Environment: The Fellowship research shall be conducted in the laboratories or medical facilities affiliated with the CPDR/USU/WRNMMC (Rockville MD, Bethesda, MD) and/or Berg Pharma (Framingham, MA) or designated collaborators. The research environment is diverse with many opportunities to establish collaborations and interactions with scientists. Other: Ability to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) required; current CAC preferred.
