HJF is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BIO) located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services the BIO Department. 

Responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Meets regularly with thesis advisor to discuss research and related assignments, which may include attending meetings, conducting literature searches, designing experiments and conducting independent research, generating and analyzing data, operating laboratory equipment, drafting, editing and reviewing manuscripts and other reports, and providing teaching assistance.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data.  Makes detailed observations about experiments.  Provides basic data analysis and interpretation (40%)
  2. Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, manuscripts. (25%)
  3. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks. (15%)
  4. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases. (20%)
  5. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures.  Completes all required training on time.  Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials. (5%)
  6. Provides quality control, trouble shooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment. (5%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communication and analytical skills

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required. 

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant experience. 

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Must be enrolled in a graduate program.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
