HJF is seeking a Nutritionist to support the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) and the Military Emergency Medicine (MEM) Department of the Uniformed Services University (USU) located offsite on Rockledge Drive in Bethesda, MD.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CHAMP, MEM, and USU.

This is a position with CHAMP’s Education Branch and the role works primarily with the Human Performance Resources by CHAMP (HPRC) team as well as with the Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) team and the CHAMP Nutrition team. Main responsibility is translating relevant nutrition science into practical resources using multiple platforms (videos, articles, blogs, infographics, and social media campaigns). Nutritionist will tailor nutrition information to the unique needs of the military, to optimize performance and promote and maintain health. Nutritionist will deliver presentations and trainings in CONOUS locations, will represent CHAMP at outreach events, and collaborate with internal teams and external partners.

Second of three levels of Nutritionists. This level is characterized by reviewing complex research and translating it to create educational resources. Has moderate autonomy and decision making authority under the direction of a Senior Nutritionist. Solicits input from CHAMP Nutrition Team regarding content development and executes strategy for content development and implementation.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Rigorously reviews nutrition science literature and translates research into practical educational materials (articles, graphics, multimedia, integrative products, etc.) for HPRC-online.org on topics such as general nutrition, performance nutrition, specialty diets, weight loss strategies, and eating environments for military personnel. 60%
  2. Collaborates internally with CHAMP SMEs and externally with the military nutrition and dietetic community to inform resource development and increase awareness of CHAMP as a resource to various DoD communities. 10%
  3. Helps evaluate the significance of new dietary interventions and emerging trends to optimize performance in accordance with DoD missions and objectives. 10%
  4. Responds to general nutritional and performance nutrition questions submitted by Service Members and military medical personnel, as well as military family members. 10%
  5. Engages in outreach opportunities, gives presentations on performance nutrition, teaches at workshops at conferences, universities, military affiliated groups, and other settings where performance nutrition and Human Performance Optimization (HPO) is of interest. 5%
  6. Represents CHAMP and its programs at various internal and external meetings. 5%

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of performance nutrition, nutrition education, and nutrition in military settings. Ability to develop evidence-based resources from published research. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Above average collaboration skills and the ability to work across multiple teams and balance the demands of various stakeholders.

Minimum Education: Master’s degree in Nutrition required. 

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 3-5 years of relevant work experience required.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Registered Dietitian (RD) required. Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics preferred.

Travel Requirements: Travel up to 5-8 times a year for 2-3 days at a time. 

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
