HJF is seeking multiple Standardized Patients to support the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU.

Standardized Patients (SPs) are intermittent, on call employees who are cast in roles to portray patients in medical education simulation. SPs are uniquely trained for each scenario in which they participate in order to portray a patient (both personality and pathology) in realistic and repeatable ways. SP performance must be accurate and standardized. SPs interact with learners in experiential education and assessment contexts and must be able to assess learner performance with great accuracy and provide substantive, actionable feedback, either written or verbal.

The number of hours required for training varies, dependent upon the difficulty of the material being learned by the new SP’s. Written feedback may also include evaluation of Physical Exam, History Taking, and Counseling skills. SPs may be required to provide verbal and/or written feedback to learners (USU Students) addressing communication skills.  

Responsibilities:

  1. Attends training with materials prepared and/or memorized for every scenario scheduled.
  2. Portrays patients in a simulated healthcare scenario accurately and consistently while recreating history, personality, physical findings and emotional state required.
  3. Consistently completes checklists with at least 85% accuracy during assessment of learners.
  4. Provides relevant, actionable feedback verbally or in writing.
  5. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Must be reliable (on-time for training sessions and scheduled performances). Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must have strong attention to detail. Must maintain the confidentiality of the students/residents and healthcare professionals. Must maintain confidentiality regarding the training and assessment materials received; discussion, disclosure, or reproduction any materials are strictly prohibited. Must agree to be physically examined by students/residents and other healthcare professionals if deemed necessary. Must agree to be videotaped. Medical experience is helpful but not required. Acting experience is helpful but not required. Ability to read, memorize lines and understand intent of scenarios. Must comply with policies explained in Val G Hemming Simulation Center SP Handbook. Must be able to memorize checklist items and observe and record items done/not done while portraying patient role simultaneously with approximately 85% accuracy. Demonstrate ability and willingness to work cooperatively and professionally with learners, faculty and administrators.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  HS diploma.

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years’ experience as a Standardized Patient.

Physical Capabilities: Walking, Standing, Sitting.
