HJF is a Senior Scientist/Principal Investigator to support the Infectious Disease Directorate (IDD) at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to IDD. 

The incumbent will serve as the Principal Investigator, representing each of the four departments within the Directorate as the primary technical lead.

Responsibilities:                             

  1. Oversees research projects within IDD. Maintains knowledge of ongoing research projects and communicates with Directorate Head.
  2. Interacts with multiple NMRC departments such as Wound Infections, Enterics, Viral and Ricketsial Disease and Malaria as well as outside funders and collaborators.  Acts as representative for directorate meetings.
  3. Provide guidance and makes contributions to prepare written reports, new grant and funding applications, manuscripts for submission to scientific journal, and patent applications. 
  4. Provide assistance to staff scientists and technical staff
  5. Serves as in-house and outside consultant.                    
  6. Attend meetings and safety training as required.
  7. Provide collaborative assistance that require the incumbent’s expertise
  8. Completes other projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable highly complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Ph.D. in related scientific discipline or M.D. 

Minimum Experience: At least 10 years directly related research and management experience.

Physical Capabilities: Work involves long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Supervises technical and scientific staff.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials.

Background: U.S. Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold a Secret Security Clearance.
