HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the research in Dr. Christopher Broder’s laboratory within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

The incumbent is responsible for research and/or project development in collaboration with others. Primary role will be to act as a research assistant to support the development of antibodies, recombinant proteins and serological tools for application in research projects involving proteins derived from henipaviruses (e.g. Nipah virus), filoviruses (e.g. Ebola virus) and coronaviruses (e.g. MERS-CoV). Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.  


  1. Perform cell cultures, protein expression for NIH, CEPI and DTRA supported research programs.
  2. Assist in stable cell line generation and maintenance. 
  3. Assist in the evaluation, interpretation and development of monoclonal antibodies.
  4. Responsible for streamlining and maintenance of reagent inventories.
  5. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  6. Assists in logistical coordination of material shipment with multiple collaborators.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques including but not limited to sterile cell culture, DNA cloning, protein expression and purification, western blotting; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. Strong molecular biology background required. Well organized and detail oriented. 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with a strength in molecular biology. A plus if experience is in virology or microbiology.

Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years’ experience.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment.

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
