HJF is seeking a Scientist to support Regenerative Medicine Department at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NMRC.

The incumbent will assist the Department Head in overseeing the management and the day-to-day operations of the Regenerative Medicine Department. The incumbent will provide subject matter and technical expertise for the planning of experimental design and analysis in alignment with research and developmental objectives.  The incumbent will work on various projects in concert with multiple internal and external partners to coordinate the execution of translational R&D deliverables.  He/she will work independently and collaboratively with investigators and scientific staff in the analysis and interpretation of raw and processed data including the development of detailed technical reports, quality control, data visualization (analytics/modeling), and assist with manuscript preparation and grant submissions.  He/she will provide direct supervision and mentorship to both laboratory and surgical team members.  

Essential Job Duties:  (90% of time)

The incumbent will serve as a Staff Scientist-I who will report to the Department Head and Scientific Director in overseeing the day-to-day functions within the Regenerative Medicine Department. He/she will be responsible for meeting project milestones and prioritizing workload and assignments within his/her area of responsibility. More specifically, the incumbent will:

  1. Direct and manage personnel in the conduct of laboratory and surgical experimental procedures in support of ongoing translational research protocols. The incumbent will be responsible for both the scientific and administrative activities.
  2. Design experiments, protocols, and SOPs, analyze experimental results, summarize and communicate the conclusions to team members, and senior research management.
  3. Manage project plans and dashboards for projects (sample procurement and storage, processing workflows, data collection and archiving, and data analysis, interpretation and reporting).
  4. Analyze research progress, engage in critical thinking, and assert strong problem solving toward streamlining delivery of key data and interpretations.
  5. Maintain and provide project documentation in accordance with internal/external requirements.
  6. Ensure laboratory output meets established program expectations, standards and quality, within budget and on schedule.
  7. Train, supervise and provide guidance to a multidisciplinary project team of technicians and students in procedures and methods routinely utilized within the laboratory and in the operating room.
  8. Attend Command and Directorate leadership meetings as well as other intramural meetings and works externally to integrate and coordinate REGMED research with other agencies and the private sector.
  9. Support, conceptualize, prepare, and amend Institutional Animal Care and Use protocols (IACUC) in support of departmental research objectives.
  10. Oversee the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and safety records with federal and institutional guidelines.
  11. Function as a key investigator in research projects with significant effort devoted to the preparation of intramural and/or extramural grant funded research proposals AI. The incumbent must spearhead the writing and submission of at least one external grant proposal each year in order to achieve a performance rating of successful.
  12. Present findings and assist in the preparation of progress reports to funding sponsors.
  13. Disseminate results of research efforts through formal reports, attendance at national and international scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Other Job Duties: (10% of time)

  1. Critically document, analyze, interpret, troubleshoot and communicate results and progress for management review in addition to diverse scientific audiences.
  2. Develop solutions to address project requirements.
  3. Act as a key liaison between various project teams/external partners and governance bodies.
  4. Keep abreast of project related research findings in the scientific literature as well as state-of-the art/cutting-edge diagnostic/biomarker discovery technology platforms which may have project applicability.  
  5. Maintain SOPs, team meeting notes/agenda and project presentation documentation.
  6. Participate in Departmental Project and team meetings.
  7. Mentor graduate level and summer students.
  8. Assist Principal Investigators with IACUC submissions.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Leadership skills and supervisory experience required. Must be able to multitask, organize and coordinate diverse activities in a multidisciplinary team-highly-matrixed work environment. High attention to detail required and must be able to work across functional disciplines.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present data at project team or other meetings as appropriate are essential.
  3. Must be self-motivated and highly responsible, with the ability to execute technical tasks and projects with minimal supervision and work multiple projects simultaneously. Organizational and excellent independent troubleshooting abilities are musts.
  4. Proven experience in immuno-assay, biochemical and gene expression assay development.
  5. Broad working knowledge and experience/expertise in bone cell biology/development, multi-analytic proteomic profiling, qRT-PCR, ELISA, mRNA isolation and quantification, cell culture and other basic cellular and molecular biology.
  6. Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with FAC-Sorting and Flow Cytometry assay development and related applications. Must be able to develop, run and analyze multicolor panels and assays.
  7. Familiarity with SOPs as well as other standard research laboratory practices.
  8. Proficient in micro computed tomography analysis and other data analysis/ management tools is a plus.
  9. Must be familiar with large and small animal post-operative care and have no reservations in conducting surgical procedures on mice, rats, and swine.
  10. Experience with experimental survival surgery is a plus.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  

  • The incumbent must possess a Medical or Doctoral degree conferred in the field of Biology, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Biomedical Engineering or related field. 
  • In addition, the incumbent must have at least 18 months of postdoctoral experience in a reputable molecular biology/immunology/bone cell biology laboratory.

Physical Capabilities:

The incumbent may be required to stand or sit for long periods of time or bend from a standing position. The incumbent will need to possess excellent hand-eye coordination and be able to carry light to moderate laboratory equipment while walking.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The incumbent will oversee the day-by-day activities of research assistants, animal technicians and possible postdoctoral and graduate level or summer students. The incumbent will train junior personnel in the safe conduct of laboratory practices and procedures. The incumbent should possess a basic knowledge in management of personnel including recruitment, evaluation, counseling and disciplining.

Work Environment:

Cellular and Molecular biology laboratory, large and small animal laboratory.


US Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold a Department of Defense issued Secret Clearance. Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC).
