HJF is seeking Graduate student enrolled at the Uniformed Services University, hired as a student research assistant to assist in carrying out one or more research projects in epigenetics and radiobiology as assigned by their academic mentor.  Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.  Meets regularly with thesis advisor to discuss research and related assignments, which may include conducting literature searches; designing experiments and conducting independent research; generating and analyzing data; operating standard laboratory equipment and special machinery including gamma irradiators; drafting, editing and reviewing manuscripts and other reports; providing teaching assistance; attending meetings and conferences; presenting research in posters, papers, and lectures.


  1. Performs laboratory research projects focused on radiobiology and epigenetics Prepares and maintains microbial cultures, including BSL-2 organisms.  Performs gamma irradiations of microbial specimens.  Collects and organizes generated data.  Makes detailed observations about experiments.  Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
  2. Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, manuscripts.
  3. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  4. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  5. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures.  Completes all required training on time.  Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  6. Provides quality control, troubleshooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment.
  7. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps laboratory area clean.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; knowledge of microbial culturing techniques and genetic manipulation of microorganisms; basic knowledge of radiobiology; good writing, communication, and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, enrolled in graduate program.

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years of laboratory experience

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  Must qualify and complete training for certification in the use of gamma irradiators.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Assist and train new interns and students as needed.

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
