HJF is seeking a Part Time COG Research Nurse to support the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Pediatric Division. 

Responsibilities are to perform clinical research and patient treatment in conjunction with a specified clinical research protocol and educate other staff regarding research protocol.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Educates patients and their families on the research protocol. Interviews patients and parents to collect data required for the research protocol.
  2. Reviews new patient records and screens patients for eligibility for participating in research protocol and help with obtaining appropriate consent forms per IRB and research protocol.
  3. Administers appropriate drugs to patients as necessary. Draws blood and obtains other specimens as required for research protocol and ensure timely submission of specimens required by the protocol.
  4. Identifies problems and/or complications of patients on research protocol and submit adverse reaction reports as required by the research protocol. Collects, organizes, catalogs, disseminates, and maintains appropriate files of current data and submits reports as required.
  5. Maintains weekly/monthly status reports on all patients and work with other clinical research assistants to ensure that required reports and data are submitted.
  6. Schedules all patient examinations, repeat examinations, treatments, and laboratory tests required by the research protocol.
  7. Adheres to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
  8. May analyze and interpret data.
  9. Performs other duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks; ability to learn and become proficient in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols; excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's degree in nursing, Master’s preferred.

Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years nursing experience, at least 1 years in clinical research care.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting, standing, escorting patients, carrying light items; may encounter patients who are confused, agitated, or abusive

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Licensed as a Registered Nurse, certified in basic cardiac life support. Must have or have the ability to obtain a Maryland License. Must have or have the ability to obtain an American Red Cross BLS.

Work Environment: Office and clinical patient care area; possible evening and/or weekend hours.

Background: U.S. Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold Department of Defense issued Secret Clearance.
