HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) within the Military and Emergency Medicine (MEM) Department located at the Marine Corps Base Camp in Pendleton, California. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MEM.

The incumbent will work with the Injury Prevention Research Laboratory (IPRL) on a large cohort study focusing on identifying components of military training and operations contributing to increased risk for musculoskeletal injury and identifying and reducing barriers to self-reporting of musculoskeletal injury. The candidate will conduct requisite research duties for this project under IPRL direction, which include conducting field-based research and injury tracking for a large cohort of training Marines.


  1. Conducting field-based research for a large scale military research protocol at Marine Corps Recruiting Depot San Diego (MCRD-SD) and the School of Infantry-West (SOI-W).
  2. Obtaining informed consent from potential study participants according to study requirements.
  3. Assisting with the development of study database and data management protocols.
  4. Coordination of data processing, data management, and appropriate maintenance of study records in accordance with University, IRB, and Department of Defense regulations.
  5. Act as a liaison between PI, local study staff and military commanders at MCRD-SD and SOI-W.
  6. Assists PI in development of materials and tools required for the seamless conduct of research, including regular study updates and providing necessary information for quarterly reports.
  7. As desired, assist with the preparation of abstracts and peer-reviewed research publications.
  8. Other specific duties as requested by primary investigators in accordance to general standards and skill base for Research Associates.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Well-developed clinical, analytical, and problem solving skills and excellent communication skills. The ability to prioritize tasks in order to meet timelines and deadlines. Candidate must be fastidiously organized, very flexible, and able to work under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently. Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and people skills are required. Preferred: Prior research background, experience in daily operations of research studies, or working as a research assistant strongly desired. Experience with database management and/or basic statistical analyses using SPSS. Strong interest in evidence-based research, with a desire to present at relevant national meetings

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Biomechanics, or related field required. Preferred: Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Public Health, Exercise Science, or related biomedical field. 
Minimum Experience: 0-2 years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities: Travel to study sites and for data collection is required.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Current BOC Athletic Training Certification, or post-bachelor’s training in Public Health, Exercise Science, Biomechanics, or related field.

Security Clearance: Must pass a background check, must be eligible to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); ability to hold a Secret clearance.

Work Environment: Office/laboratory environment
