HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the research in Dr. Christopher Broder’s laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
Responsible for research and/or project development in collaboration with others. Primary role will be to act as a research assistant to support the development serological tools for application in human and wildlife surveillance programs focused on exposure to henipaviruses (e.g. Nipah virus), filoviruses (e.g. Ebola virus) and coronaviruses (e.g. MERS-CoV). Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques including but not limited to sterile cell culture, DNA cloning, protein expression and purification, western blotting; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. Strong molecular biology background required.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with a strength in molecular biology. A plus if experience is in virology or microbiology.
Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years of relevant experience.
Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.
Work Environment: Laboratory environment.
Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
