HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support Dr. Ander’s USU Pain Research Grant, APG-70-9649 in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics (APG) located at Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to APG. 

Responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with experiments and to provide support in various areas as needed. 

Responsibilities: 

  1. Assists with rat surgery, behavioral testing, functional analysis, euthanasia and tissue dissection.
  2. Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data.  
  3. Uses computer for data analysis.  
  4. Prepares tissue for histology and immunohistochemistry which includes cutting tissue on a cryostat and mounting tissue on slides. 
  5. Performs immunohistochemistry.
  6. Assists with electrophysiological recordings. 
  7. Assists with laser irradiation treatments. 
  8. Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High School Graduate.

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years or relevant experience.

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals and laser equipment; requires periods of standing.

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment.

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
