HJF is seeking a Surge Team Research Assistant (temporary) to support the Center for Rehabilitation Sciences Research (CRSR) located at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, CT. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CRSR.

The incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator with research activities.  The USCGA is a designated performance site within the NCAA-DoD Grand Alliance: Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium. The CARE Consortium’s goal is to better understand the natural history and return to play criteria of NCAA athletes. In addition, the USCGA, along with the other U.S. Service Academies, will extend recruitment to all cadets at the academy including those who sustain concussion for sports, training accidents, or other trauma.  


  1. The Research Assistant will assist with data collection in adherence to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP) baseline assessment measures.
  2. Performs basic study related procedures in accordance to the local IRB
  3. Assist Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator with the administrative logistics including consenting, data collection, and scheduling.
  4. Assist with the administration of concussion baseline assessments
  5. Maintain subject files and documents all correspondence pertinent to the research study.
  6. Communicate in a professional manner with study team and attend all regular team meetings.
  7. Promote safety and confidentiality of research participants at all times.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of concussion assessments to include SCAT3, SAC, ImPACT, Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), etc. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be organized and attentive to detail. 
  • May be required to work variable schedules as needed.

Minimum Education:  Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:  0 to 2 years’ experience. 1 year of experience with the administration of concussion baseline assessments preferred. Certified athletic trainer or athletic training student preferred.
