HJF is seeking an Intern, APRRP to support the Center for Global Health Engagement (CGHE) located in Rockville, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CGHE. 

Established by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), the Center for Global Health Engagement (CGHE) works to lead, integrate and synchronize the University’s contributions to Department of Defense (DoD) global health engagement and national security objectives by providing a hub for GHE thought leadership and knowledge, strategic communications and outreach, operational support, research, and capability integration of education, training and planning. 

The APRRP Intern will work under the supervision of the APRRP Program Manager in support of the African Peacekeeping Rapid Response Partnership (APRRP) which is designed to strengthen the capacity of African troop-contributing countries (TCC) to rapidly respond to emerging crises in Africa. Effectively responding to emerging crises before they threaten regional stability requires sustainable, rapid response peacekeeping capabilities in Africa. APRRP seeks to build the key military enablers: transportation, engineering, logistics, communications, and medical capabilities, to establish, operate, and sustain bases of operations in a deployed environment. CGHE serves as the primary implementing partner for training related to the development of medical capabilities.    
   
Responsibilities: 

  1. Assist the Training Coordinator in liaising with course instructors (subject matter experts) to develop and refine course curricula and edit corresponding materials;
  2. Assist the Training Coordinator with the development of course agendas, reports, web articles, press releases, and program fact sheets;
  3. Assist the Conference Manager with coordination of logistical needs (meeting materials, travel coordination etc.) and follow-up as needed;
  4. Assist the Training Coordinator with preparation of meeting/activity summaries and ensure distribution to participants/stakeholders;
  5. Support other APRRP activities as directed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent organizational skills;

  • Interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively in English;
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment; 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • English fluency.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Familiarity with disaster management, public health, and international development issues; French fluency, ideally including experience in translation and interpretation. International experience preferred.

Minimum Education: High school or College Coursework towards Bachelor’s degree in a related subject: International Relations or Affairs, Emergency/Disaster Management, Public Health, Communication. 

Minimum Experience: 0 - 2 years of experience

Physical Capabilities: The ability to lift and carry moderate to heavy weight objects (50-75 lbs.).  

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Works under the direct supervision of the APRRP Program Manager and receives appropriate programmatic and technical guidance from the Principal Investigator. Work is evaluated in accordance with Henry M. Jackson Foundation Policy including, but not limited to, results achieved towards established goals and requirements, effectiveness, timeliness, application of sound business practices, and efficient use of resources.  

Work Environment: Office environment.
