The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Research Associate for the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) located at the Administrative Office in Rockville, MD.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CNRM.

CNRM is a multi-site medical care, clinical research and education center. It is a unique collaboration of the Department of Defense (DoD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and civilian partners. The mission of CNRM is to serve active duty military, their dependents and veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) through state-of-the-art medical care, innovative clinical research initiatives and education programs. The Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) is a collaborative intramural federal program consisting of 6 programs and was developed to bring together the expertise of clinicians and scientists across disciplines to catalyze innovative approaches to Traumatic Brain Injury research. In addition, the office has visibility and contributes to the expertise of DoD level related clinical activity related to traumatic brain injury.

The Research Associate will be responsible for daily clinical research activities in the CNRM Recruitment Core to include cross core interaction with study volunteers, clinical researchers, scientists, and data entry coordinators. The Research Associate may also assist in data cleaning, quality assurance, and data analyses for publication submissions.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Serves as a Research Associate for the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) Recruitment Core, as well as supported studies as assigned.
  2. Maintains a close liaison with Project Manager, and other staff on the research and clinical teams.
  3. Assists in and conducts ad-hoc data analysis for research proposals, presentations, etc. under the supervision of the Recruitment Core Project Manager and Principal Investigator. 
  4. Works with the Principal Investigator and senior CNRM leadership to establish, obtain and maintain all necessary approvals for CNRM’s national on-line registry of interested research participants, establishes liaisons with regional and national military treatment facilities to ensure awareness of the registry, and coordinates the consent, data capture and/or entry, and potential referral to supported studies, of interested research participants. 
  5. Facilitates and participates in all recruitment strategies, including military hospital-based and national capital area recruitment efforts.
  6. Assist with participant screening and scheduling of study visits under the direction of the Core Principal Investigator and Project Manager.
  7. Administers self-report questionnaires and neuropsychological assessments as needed.
  8. Maintains clinical and research databases and logs in records in compliance with study, IRB, and organizational requirements, ensures that paperwork is properly stored/maintained according to regulations.
  9. Manages and maintains internal databases used to assess eligibility and refer patients to other clinical teams. 
  10. Work closely with informatics team to ensure data is clean and ready for upload into to CNRM and affiliated data repositories.
  11. Present research findings at research symposiums and scientific meetings.
  12. Discuss research protocols and the referral process with other study teams and work closely with study staff to refer and track patients.
  13. Assist Principal Investigator, Project Manager, and Coordinators with development of recruitment plans for referral studies.
  14. Responsible for making changes to the CNRM patient focused website.
  15. Responsible for maintaining CNRM’s visibility on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, while also working with other study teams to bring visibility to their respective studies.
  16. Responsible for ordering research materials, office supplies, patient gift cards, etc.
  17. Accurately collects and processes all study related data.  Assists with data entry, data coding, data analysis, QA/QC, and other study-related administrative procedures.
  18. Assists in maintaining and documenting study supplies.
  19. Successfully complete and maintain all WRNMMC/USU/HJF and contractor required training and security clearance.
  20. Participate in special projects and research development as needed.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures. Knowledge of relevant scientific principles and procedures; experience with electronic literature search databases. Skill in using computers and relevant software, including electronic clinical data capture system, SPSS and/or SAS, Excel, Endnote, Adobe, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work independently. Interpersonal skills required to work successfully and professionally within multi-disciplinary teams and with participants.  Ability to develop rapport with participants over the telephone and in person.  Ability to use sound judgment in solving problems.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  A Master’s degree in a scientific disciple.

Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years of clinical research experience with human subjects. Previous experience working in a military setting is an asset, but not required.

Physical Capabilities: Walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items. May encounter or work with participants who are confused, agitated, or disabled. Long periods of standing or sitting.

Work Environment: Office in a clinical/hospital environment.
