HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Radiation Countermeasures Program at the Scientific Research Department (SRD) in the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to SRD. 

The incumbent is responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others, and provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs laboratory research projects using both small and large animal models, including the collecting and organizing data, performing biochemical assays from animal sources, making detailed observations about experiments, and providing basic data analysis and interpretation.
  2. Performs various veterinary procedures at animal facilities while conducting research related procedures such as blood and tissue collection, and necropsy. 
  3. Assists in the preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, summaries, and protocols.
  4. Conducts lab work, maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks.
  5. Assist with maintaining databases. Perform data entry for research projects ensuring that data is entered for analysis in a timely and efficient manner. Ensure that the confidentiality and security of data are maintained.
  6. Must be capable of handling multiple projects.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; experience handling animals; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline.

Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years’ experience of working in a laboratory environment or an animal facility.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment, including some work in an animal facility.

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
