HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics (PMB), Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to PMB.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaborations with the Principal Investigator. This person will work with Dr. Sherrie Wilcox to study technology-based approaches for enhancing the social and behavioral health of military service members, veterans, and their families. Current efforts are focused on applying health behavior theories to avatar interactions and virtual reality to (1) improve the health of military family caregivers and injured service members and (2) enhance communication around intimacy in clinical settings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data. Knowledge of virtual reality and/or mobile app programming helpful, but not required. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to engage in self-directed learning.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: PhD in Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Health Promotion, or a related scientific discipline.Candidates with a terminal degree in Engineering, Computer Programming, and related scientific disciplines will also be considered. Evidence of a strong research background as reflected by scholarly presentations and/or publications, as well as other work experience is highly desired.
Minimum Experience: 0-2 years of experience.
Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; ability to carry 25 pounds.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May provide guidance to research staff. May mentor students and research staff. Reports to Dr. Wilcox.
Travel: May require some travel to off-site locations and scientific meetings.
Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
