HJF is seeking a Research Analyst to support the African Cohort Study (AFRICOS) within the U.S. Military Research Program (MHRP) located at the MHRP Office in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. 

Responsibilities are to provide biostatistical support for clinical and/or laboratory research. This involves performing statistical analysis on data collected from clinical trials and/or research studies. This ongoing prospective cohort study follows HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected participants who are engaged in care at clinical sites in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria. Under the supervision of the Director of the MHRP Data Coordinating and Analysis Center (DCAC), the incumbent will: work closely with Principal Investigators (PIs) and Study Chairs, with a focus on AFRICOS; be responsible for the coordination of data across the participating research sites; regularly review data for completion and accuracy; and, communicate with participating sites to improve data integrity. The incumbent will be responsible for generating reports that summarize research data for presentation to collaborators, funders, and other entities. The incumbent will provide support to additional research projects as directed. 


  1. Supports research physicians and analysts by coordinating activities related to data management, integrity, presentation, and analysis. 
  2. Provides relevant program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, funders, and other entities.
  3. Assists with reviewing and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of data included in AFRICOS and related research databases.
  4. Liaises with the PIs and Study Chairs to help generate data queries, review site communications regarding research data, and implement systems to improve data integrity.
  5. Assists with processing data requests from collaborators, tracking the progress of analyses conducted by collaborators, and integrating data generated by collaborators into MHRP research databases.  
  6. Prepares figures, slides, posters and other materials to facilitate the sharing of research findings with collaborators, funders, and the broader academic community. 
  7. Assists with data review and analysis using data collected in AFRICOS and related research studies in order to assess the impact of clinical practices, biological factors and socio-behavioral issues on HIV infection and disease progression.  
  8. Assists with the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals.
  9. Performs other duties as required. May include travel to international sites for the provision of onsite training and technical assistance. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of data management and biostatistical methods; proficiency in data analyses using statistical tools such as SAS, Stata, and GraphPad Prism; experience in the analysis of clinical cohort data; familiarity with medical science and clinical research, ideally with experience in HIV-related research; ability to communicate effectively; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Minimum Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or related field. Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, statistics or a related field preferred.  

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 4 to 6 years’ experience; Or Master’s degree with 0-2 years of experience. Experience in the field of HIV research preferred.

Physical Capabilities:  Extended periods of sitting.

Work Environment:  Office or laboratory environment.
