HJF is seeking a Senior Microbiology Research Assistant to support the Operation Infectious Disease (OID) Department located at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to OID.

Performs routine and non-routine laboratory procedures for the department to enhance laboratory efficiency. Independently works on assigned projects with little to no supervision and serves as the main trainer for new employees in bacteriology, troubleshooting and analysis of data. 


  1. Using independent judgement to perform basic to advanced microbiology (bacteriology, virology, serology) procedures to include pipetting, bacteriology isolation techniques, microscope work, and staining slides.
  2. In the absence of a supervisor oversees daily activities of laboratory procedures, results, technicians and safety in the lab.
  3. Assists supervisor in setting up new test procedures.
  4. Assists senior technicians with special projects.
  5. Performs required quality control procedure for every test done and keeps a record in the designated logbook or worksheet.
  6. Keeps an accurate inventory of isolates and controls.
  7. Receives specimens and report results.
  8. Performs computer data entry of laboratory results and other laboratory information for both bacteriology and virology. 
  9. Performs computer data finalizing and generates reports for both bacteriology and virology.
  10. File and organize completed worksheets and forms for virology and bacteriology. 
  11. Orders reagents and supplies for the bacteriology laboratory.
  12. Maintains policies and procedures for CAP accreditation.
  13. Assists with CAP inspection as a runner for bacteriology.
  14. Creates and presents abstracts and papers at scientific conferences.
  15. Performs and/or coordinates maintenance on equipment.
  16. Maintains inventory of supplies.
  17. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of microbiology, basic laboratory, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in use of work processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software.
  • Skill in use of pipettes, microscopes, and staining procedures.
  • Skill in use of aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to be trained on proper throat, urine, and blood collection techniques.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to do long periods of repetitive work. 
  • Ability to correctly transcribe laboratory results.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures,
  • Ability to be a self-started and have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participants.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: This position requires the equivalent of a Bachelor's level college degree in Molecular Biology. Microbiology, or Medical Technology or related field. License in Medical Technology, MT (ASCP), Microbiology Technologist, M(ASCP), or equivalent is required. 

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years of laboratory experience.

Physical Capabilities: Walking, standing, must be able to read reports, labels and use computer, must be able to hear well enough to communicate with coworkers, must be able to write, type, and use phone system. Candidates may be required to wear a face mask while interacting with patients and/or specimens and must be able to pass a respirator fit test. In order for the face mask to effectively protect the user, facial har must be clean shaven. Candidate is required to undergo annual screening for Tuberculosis.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Ability to supervise laboratory procedures and staff in the absence of the supervisor.

Security Clearance: It is condition of employment with the Naval Health Research Center that you undergo a favorable National Agency Check with Local Agency and Credit Checks (NACLC) investigation which will include being fingerprinted.
