HJF is seeking a Clinical Nurse  to support the Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CPDR. US Citizenship is required for this position. WRNMMC requires a Maryland RN license.

 The incumbent will be responsible for the clinical practices as defined and designated by senior clinical staff. Acts as a patient care coordinator for clinic patients and their families. Works under the supervision of nurse manager, nurse practitioner and other senior clinical staff as indicated.

Responsibilities:

  1. Works under the direct supervision of the nurse manager, clinic physician assistant, nurse practitioner and physicians participating in the implementation and evaluation of patient care.  Has and maintains familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within the field of urology and prostate disease care.
  2. Assists front desk for all patient related care, questions and concerns. This oversight includes but is not limited to: 
    • Patient triaging
    • Responsible for preoperative coordination of patients, including completion of APU packets, slide requests, preparation of leave letters, Fisher House and other accommodation requests.
    • Educates and consents patients for the CPDR core research protocols (CPDR database, biospecimen bank, Quality of Life and Decision Making protocols)
    • Order and administer injectable medications for patients 
    • Performs direct patient care as ordered by the overseeing clinicians within the scope of the center
    • Strives to ensure patient satisfaction and actively seeks ways to improve the care given to patients in the clinic.
    • Review incoming consults for appropriate clinic assignment
  3. Facilitates the information flow among clinical staff. Relays pertinent information to administrative support staff to ensure patients are scheduled for needed appointments. 
  4. Coordinates the disposal of and collection of hazardous (biological and sharps) waste IAW WRNMMC policy and procedure.
  5. Ensures that all exam rooms are cleaned and stocked by the end of each day, to include uroflow machine maintenance.
  6. Assists with patient education.
  7. Attend clinically relevant WRNMMC in-services.
  8. Assist CPDR providers on designated multi-disciplinary and NCI clinic days, maintain providers’ schedules, coordinates it with operating room/surgical log system. Coordinates surgical schedules with the Urology Department’s surgery case manager. 
  9. Assists in scheduling MRI biopsy procedures for CPDR providers, in coordination with Radiology, and coordinates patient education of MRI biopsy procedure.
  10. Assists with initiates, updates and maintains CPDR employees’ required training
  11. Adheres to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Prior experience working in protocol/pathway driven environments and able to deviate and make appropriate referrals

  • Knowledge of computer operations
  • Able to anticipate patient needs and take appropriate course of action, using approved guidelines, protocols, and pathways
  • Basic understanding of procedures commonly done in the ambulatory setting
  • Knowledge of Federal regulations regarding the use of human subjects in research.
  • Knowledge of clinical medicine and procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks; proficient skills in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's degree. Graduate of an accredited nursing school, Professional License required (R.N.)

Minimum Experience: 4 to 6 years of experience with some exposure to research preferred.

Physical Capabilities: Requires sitting for long periods at a computer and/or desk. Walking, lifting and bending required.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland is a site requirement, Completion of the DOD CITI online research course, certification in BCLS.

Work Environment: Hospital/Office.

Background: US Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold Department of Defense issued Secret Clearance.
