HJF is seeking a Research Technician II to support the Combat Casualty Care program within the Naval Medical Research Unit – San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) located at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NAMRU-SA.

The incumbent will be responsible for supporting laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems in the areas of hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, direct energy Bioeffects, and bioassay development.


  1. Implement and maintain research files.
  2. Recommend changes to protocols and standard operating procedures.
  3. Modify and plan research experiments, procedures and tests.
  4. Coordinate the implementation of sponsored and PI initiated laboratory research studies, including maintenance of study records and activities associated with internal and external audits in coordination with the PI.
  5. Assist with the preparation for presentations and written published articles.
  6. Set up, operate, modify and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  7. Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  8. Conduct and support surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, and ensuring specific pathogen free techniques. 
  9. Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, quality assurance procedures and record keeping, 
  10. Daily handling and restraining of various small and large animal species. 
  11. Coordinates animal procurement and shipping procedures.
  12. Conduct daily and weekly inspections of areas of responsibility to ensure compliance with standards. 
  13. Coordinate animal research activities between Research Scientist, animal care staff, and research technician.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to support the implementation of laboratory based research studies, including utilization of state-of-the-art methodologies in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology. Ability to collect data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures. Ability to perform library research. Ability to organize and maintain databases. Must of knowledge of theory and use of state-of-the-art equipment including flow cytometry, FACS sorting, Luminex (multiplex analysis), real-time PCR, HPLC, FPLC, protein quantitation and analysis, nucleic acid quantitation and analysis. Must have knowledge of in vivo and in vitro model systems. Must have knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Office suite and graphing software.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associates degree with three years of experience or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Physiology, Neurophysiology, Neurosciences, Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field. 

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years of experience

Physical Capabilities:  Requires long periods of standing

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment
