HJF is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to support the Uniformed Services University (USU), F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine, Office of the Assistant Vice President for Administration, Division of Facilities. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU. The Division’s functions include maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings and structures; engineering, designing, maintenance and repair of utilities, water, sewage, and similar systems; maintenance and repair, and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC + R); grounds maintenance; and provision for associated building services.
The mission of the USU is to provide the highest quality education program in the health sciences to those selected individuals who demonstrate dedication to career in the health professions in the Uniformed Services. The USU is authorized to grant appropriate advanced academic degrees and has established postdoctoral, postgraduate, and technological institutes. Programs in continuing education for military members of the health professions have been established so that the highest standards of health care may be maintained within the military medical departments. The USU must be responsible to the overall educational needs of the Military Departments relating specifically to the preparation of individuals for careers in the health professions. The USU is developing programs designed to recruit and retain superior health science professionals as faculty and researchers, and to ensure maximum utilization of the health science labor force, facilities, and equipment available within military medical departments worldwide.
• Work involves installing, modifying, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing new and existing utility systems, variety of electrical systems, commercial/industrial HVAC&R systems.
• Equipment, such as, autoclaves and sterilizers, high temperature sanitizing systems, steam generators, circulating pumps, condensate systems; compressors air handler units, electric motors, pneumatic and direct digital controls (DDC), evaporators, humidifiers, refrigerated air dryers, pumps, refrigerated water chillers; power distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amerage, and phase requirements to distribution panels, control boards, alarm systems, etc.
• Work will also involve applying skills in using hand and power tools and test equipment.
• The systems that the mechanic will install and repair are used to serve computer centers, laboratories, laboratory animal habitats, warehouse areas, office areas, etc.
• Mechanic will work from oral instructions, blue prints, and written work orders.
• Trace and locate defects using the proper tools and testing devices, and accomplish repairs according to accepted trade practices.
• The mechanic uses extensive knowledge of the construction and operation of variety of domestic systems.
• The mechanic uses this knowledge to make visual, audible, and mechanical checks for the proper temperature of conditioned spaces; proper oil levels; unusual noises; overheated bearings; loose connections; faulty insulations; frayed or loose belts, gaskets, and pulleys; and other similar defects.
• The mechanic must be skilled in serving power sources.
• The mechanic must have skills in the use of any of the accepted trade methods and techniques.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The supervisor assigns work orally and through written work requests accompanied by building plans, shop sketches, or blue prints. The mechanic plans test procedures, determines the proper kind and type of parts and equipment needed, and installs and repairs a variety of systems with little or no check during the progress of the assignment. Completed work is checked to insure that it meets accepted practices. This requires more frequent and more difficult determinations concerning the location of faulty equipment and balance the systems. Because there is a greater variety of equipment in the more complex systems, repairs are more numerous and complex.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma.
Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years’ experience involving HVACR equipment and appliances.
Physical Capabilities: The mechanic handles and carries tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places, therefore, stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling are frequently for long periods of time.
Work Environment: The mechanic is occasionally required to work outside on the top of buildings, in cramped spaces with low overheads, and places where temperatures may be below freezing or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing may be work at times to protect the mechanic against toxic fumes or chemicals. The mechanic will be exposed to different refrigerant gases which in repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. The mechanic occasionally is subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments.
