HJF is seeking a Research Assistant III to support a growing International Clinical Research Laboratory at the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) within the Austere environments Consortium for Enhanced Sepsis Outcomes (ACESO) located at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to ACESO. US Citizenship is required for this position.

ACESO is headquartered in Frederick, MD and conducts clinical research at numerous international sites. The incumbent will conduct immune-assays and/or molecular and serological analyses to characterize the host response to human infection. Prior experience with ELISA, Luminex and PCR is essential. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans, conducts, and completes investigations under the supervision of the senior staff of the laboratory. Assignments require the performance of complex laboratory test, determination and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches. 
  2. After an initial training period develop the relevant skills in the techniques involved. 
  3. Conducts ELISA, PCR/rt-PCR assays, sequencing analysis, PBMC isolations, and other clinical sample preparation.
  4. Analyzes human plasma through bead-based suspension microarrays (Luminex/Magpix). 
  5. Exercise an ability to prioritize duties and to solve problems. 
  6. Give high attention to detail and maintain scrupulous record keeping and laboratory practices. 
  7. Possess a working knowledge of safety standards for chemical and biological laboratories. 
  8. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. 
  9. Works under the direction of the senior staff, and night/weekends as needed for support of work. 
  10. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean. 
  11. Ordering of laboratory & clinical supplies through commercial and US Navy procurement processes. 
  12. Train junior lab staff in procedures and laboratory techniques. 
  13. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communication and analytical skills; ability to meet deadlines of projects. Excellent laboratory techniques including blood-borne pathogens precautions. Demonstrated experience working with immune-assays such as ELISA and Luminex/MagPix assays. Demonstrated experience with real time PCR.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a biological science. 

Minimum Experience: 4 – 6 years of laboratory experience

Preferred Experience: Favorable consideration will be given to those candidates with demonstrated phlebotomy experience. Experience with Magpix and/or Luminex as well as real time PCR are required. 

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; must be capable of working solo and as a laboratory team member; must be able to handle various chemicals and potential biohazards; must be available nights or weekends as needed for completion of laboratory experiments as necessary. 

Working Environment: Laboratory environment. 

Background Requirement: This positions requires eligibility to obtain a Secret Clearance and a CAC (Common Access Card) clearance. US Citizenship required.
