HJF is seeking a Microbiology Supervisor to support the Operation Infectious Diseases (OID) Department located at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to OID. 

The incumbent is responsible for overseeing all daily aspects of laboratory procedures, results, technicians, and safety in the laboratory section assigned.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervises and trains laboratory personnel in procedures of testing, equipment, safety and quality control.
  2. Firsthand knowledge of microbiology techniques in identification and characterization of bacteria and viruses by conventional culture methods, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. 
  3. Responsible for assuring all results released/entered into the database are complete, accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  4. Responsible for the validation/verification of new lab assays and/or equipment.
  5. Upholds and ensures that policies and procedures are being followed based on current and/or future accrediting organizations (CAP).
  6. Writes, reviews and updates standard operating procedures and forms.
  7. Responsible for helping to identify trends in surveillance data and designing proper laboratory support of these projects.
  8. Updates laboratory capabilities with new techniques and assays as necessary and feasible.
  9. Monitors that all inventory of laboratory supplies are maintained.
  10. Performs computer data entry of lab results and other lab information.
  11. Monitors quality assurance for assigned laboratory section.
  12. Creates abstracts and manuscripts and the ability to present them at scientific conferences.
  13. Oversees the maintenance on equipment.
  14. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of microbiology, laboratory procedures, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software.
  • Skill in use of pipettes, microscopes, staining procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work.
  • Ability to supervise and train technicians and direct work assignments.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to make presentation to groups.
  • Ability to write manuscripts and abstracts.
  • Ability to do long periods of repetitive work.
  • Ability to correctly transcribe laboratory results.
  • Ability to create and enforce standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participants.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: This position requires the equivalent of a college degree in Biology, Microbiology, or Medical Technology or related field and 4 years related experience (one of which is in microbiology) under a qualified laboratory director. License in Medical Technology, MT (ASCP), Microbiology Technologist, M(ASCP), or equivalent is required.

Physical Capabilities: Must be able to walk, stand, sit for long periods of time, and hear well enough to communicate with coworkers, read reports, have normal color vision, be dexterous and possess exceptional hand-eye coordination.  Candidate may be required to wear a face mask while interacting with patients and/or specimens and must be able to pass a respirator fit test.  In order for the face mask to effectively protect the user, facial hair must be clean shaven.  Candidate is required to undergo  annual screening for tuberculosis.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Yes

Work Environment: Clinical laboratory working conditions. Handle hazardous waste materials. Possible exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens; regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases; must comply with applicable safety procedures.

Security Clearance:  It is a condition of employment with the Naval Health Research Center that you undergo a favorable National Agency Check with Local Agency and Credit Checks (NACLC) investigation which will include being fingerprinted.
