HJF is seeking a Physician to support the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) within the Department of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University. This position is located on Rockledge Drive in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Psychiatry. 

Responsible for the treatment of patients during the progression of their disease and their participation in clinical research programs within established institutional policies and procedures; for the direction and execution of clinical research programs, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed for safety and regulatory compliance; and for assuring accuracy of complex clinical documentation on patients' records, maintaining confidentiality.


  1. Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with research physicians and scientists at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress and the Department of Psychiatry.
  2. Directs and participates in the submission of clinical research protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  3. Provides treatment to military patients within a military health system during the course of their disease, and counsels patients regarding the effects of drugs or processes. Provision of direct patient care corresponding with maintenance of clinical skills.
  4. Directs and participates in residency training programs, rounds, conferences, and medical personnel training programs.
  5. Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the clinical research program.
  6. Provides relevant program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, and sponsors of the clinical research programs.
  7. Designs, develops, and implements scientific research studies, and prepares manuscripts based on research and/or development for publication in professional journals and books.
  8. Interpretation and application of data analyses, both independently and in collaboration with CSTS data analysts.
  9. Prepares grant applications, and manages IRB and grant administration issues.
  10. Participates in the Physician Training Program at the discretion of the Chair, Department of Psychiatry.
  11. Educating and training of psychiatric residents, interns, and medical students..
  12. Administrative activities related to organizational policy and procedures.
  13. Prepares scientific papers for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals.
  14. Performs other assignments as required.

Required Knowledge. Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks; knowledge of medical science and the development of clinical research programs; experience in the design of clinical research trials; ability to communicate effectively; ability to make effective presentations and publish; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills; familiarity with military medical system desirable ..

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  M.D. degree. Completed residency and advanced training in Psychiatry, to include fellowship(s)

Minimum Experience:  Six or more years of related experience. Demonstrated capability of research and administrative skills. Experience with grant and IRB submissions and data collection. Assumed leadership role(s) in professional organization(s). Published articles in peer­ reviewed academic journals. Must meet general requirements to be considered eligible for Assistant or Associate Professor faculty appointment with associated skills.

Physical Capabilities:  Bending, standing, and sitting.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Valid, unrestricted licensure to practice medicine within the continental United States; Board certified in Psychiatry. Independent  practice following training. Eligible to be credentialed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  May supervise Research Assistants and Center scientists and researchers ..
