The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) is seeking a Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Education Specialist to support the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) within the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine (MEM), Uniformed Services University, located at their Rockledge Drive location in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CHAMP/MEM. 

The Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Education Specialist will be supporting the Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) program and join a team of Nutritionists, editors, and graphic artists whose mission is to educate service members and their families on safe supplement usage. The primary duty is to answer dietary supplement-related questions by Warfighters, healthcare providers, military leaders, and civilians via the Ask the Expert function by reviewing and translating scientific literature.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Answer dietary supplement-related questions asked by Warfighters, healthcare providers, military leaders, and civilians via the Ask the Expert function on the OPSS website.
  2. Review and translate scientific literature to develop educational materials on the topic of dietary supplements and dietary supplement ingredients tailored for military personnel under the direction of the OPSS Director. Summarize literature findings as needed.
  3. Assist OPSS team with evaluating and maintaining content of OPSS website. Work with OPSS team to identify consumer needs and gaps in knowledge with regard to dietary supplements.
  4. Help other staff members with research and interpretation of the literature as needed.
  5. Performs other duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience with evaluation/interpretation of the scientific literature. Skilled at reviewing and interpreting the scientific literature. Ability to develop educational materials and write articles at a consumer level and health professional level. Applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to multi-task on several topics/assignments. Experience with military nutrition and/or sports nutrition, and chemistry and/or biochemistry, strongly desired.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree required, including fields of Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, or related field

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years’ experience as a nutrition researcher, biochemistry researcher, or related field preferred

Physical Capabilities:  Prolonged sitting at a computer

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  The selected applicant will work under the general direction of the Director of Operation Supplement Safety, who will evaluate the employee’s performance and direct the employee’s day-to-day activities.

Work Environment:  Works in a well-lighted and heated office, may be required from time-to- time to work in other setting.
