HJF is seeking a Data Scientist to support the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) within the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine (MEM), Uniformed Services University, located at their Rockledge Drive location in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CHAMP/MEM. 

This position is responsible for various research datasets to include security of and overseeing the maintenance and cleaning of data for these projects.


  1. Responsible for data management for multiple research protocols, including data collection and organization of data.
  2. Executes sophisticated data analyses and interpretation of the resulting output.
  3. Provides topical directions for manuscripts based on original and secondary datasets.
  4. Oversees and assists in writing and editing all parts of manuscripts, including literature reviews, statistical analyses, and discussions.
  5. Oversees and at times participates in the production of technical reports, peer review manuscripts, scholarly presentations, summaries, creates metric designs, and research protocols.
  6. Conducts power analyses and assists in optimizing empirical methods in research protocols.
  7. Mentors other faculty, staff, interns, and students in preparing peer-reviewed publications, presentations and graduate research projects.
  8. Leads data quality control for the various research protocols.
  9. Oversees data collection tools and reviews questionnaires for various research protocols.
  10. Assists with grant proposals.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis tools, including descriptive and predictive analytic methods; experience in building and managing databases, including the cleaning and organization of raw data obtained in diverse formats; specific experience using large, complex medical and administrative datasets; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong writing and manuscript editing ability; ability to interact with people of all levels; ability to take initiative in making corrections and updates to project procedures as needed.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: At least a Master’s degree in a scientific discipline that involves descriptive and predictive analyses of large medical datasets; Doctoral degree preferred.

Minimum Experience: 6+ years of experience in building, organizing, maintaining and conducting analyses using large, combined medical and administrative datasets; demonstrated proficiency in producing peer-reviewed publications as evidenced by 6+ articles that use such datasets and that have been published in medical journals

Physical Capabilities: Requires long periods of sitting and standing

Work Environment: Remote work via VPN from home or other offsite location, with intermittent travel to USU, conferences, meeting sites or data collection locations as needed
