HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the Department of Surgery located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Surgery.
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for technical assistance in surgical procedures and day-to-day post-surgical animal care management/treatment primarily related to swine and animal research protocols. The incumbent will be responsible for prepping animals and experimental surgery facilities, coordinating appropriate veterinary support services for principal investigators, maintaining veterinarian and research records, and manage the daily health observations and treatments of all research animals. The incumbent will assist with all aspects (planning, organizing, directing and implementation) of the research and/or development in collaboration with others, working to achieve the research mission. The incumbent will adhere to performance requirements, maintains conformance with specific operational standards and protocols and/or resolve technical problems appropriately. The incumbent will assist in carrying out clinical monitoring assessments and clinical evaluation measurements of research animals. The incumbent is expected to assist with planning experiments, assist with analyzing data and make presentations to others about the work. Supervision will be provided by the Principal investigator and/or designated Lead Investigator(s); however, the employee is expected to exercise an appropriate level of independence and initiative in the management of the animal laboratory research project within established guidelines. This position will require working some evenings, nights, and weekends depending on the workload of the laboratory.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements:
The incumbent must have knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good oral/written communication and analytical skills. Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline is required. The incumbent must demonstrate prior work experience in animal care and possess 0-2 years laboratory experience.
The incumbent may be required to stand, sit or bend from a standing position for long periods of time. Also, the incumbent may be handling various chemicals and potentially infectious bloodborne pathogens.
