HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support to support the Department of Medicine (MED) located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Science (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MED. 

USU is localized directly across the street from the NIH, and is thus part of an extraordinarily vibrant local biomedical research community. The incumbents responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with experiments and to provide support in various areas as needed. Uses some judgement to define and resolve problems and make recommendations.

Candidates are expected to work on ongoing research projects in structural biology aimed at understanding Fc mediated effector function of antibodies to HIV-1 and development of protein-based therapeutics and novel vaccine concepts. The candidate will be responsible for performing research activities in a laboratory setting.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Performs laboratory research activities such as: recombinant DNA manipulation, transfections, mammalian and bacterial cell expression, protein purification using affinity/gel filtration/ionic exchange columns and FPLC systems, simple crystallization experiments, etc. 
  2. Performs routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures, executing biochemical procedures such as electrophoresis, Western blots, basic cloning experiments, DNA extractions, etc.
  3. Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data.  
  4. Uses computer for data analysis.  
  5. May perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
  6. Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal;

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associates degree in biochemistry, microbiology, immunology or a closely-related scientific field

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals; requires long periods of standing

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment

Background: Eligibility to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); eligibility to obtain and hold a Public Trust background.
