HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician (Part-time) to support the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, Department of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to the USU. The primary responsibility of this position is to perform routine husbandry duties for a colony of laboratory zebrafish on weekends and some holidays as needed.

This part time position may require weekend hours of 3-4 hours per day or 6-8 hours most weekends. There is flexibility on hours/scheduling, however, the Lab Technician will be caring for animals and the employee will need to generally be available on weekends.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides live and/or dry feed to multiple tanks of zebrafish according to established protocols.
  2. Prepares live feed and maintains live feed cultures.
  3. Reads and records water quality data from automated aquatics housing system.
  4. Cleans laboratory glassware and utensils; maintains general order and neatness of working area.
  5. Reports any problems or maintenance issues to on-call laboratory/veterinary staff.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to follow general instructions; ability to work independently; good communication skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Associates

Minimum Experience: 0-2 previous laboratory experience or laboratory-based undergraduate coursework is highly preferred.

Physical Capabilities: Handles variety of chemicals; requires long periods of standing, use of step stool to reach top racks of aquatics housing system.

Hours/Work Environment: Laboratory environment. Part-time position, employee will be needed on some weekends, 3-4 hours per day (or 6-8 hours per weekend), may be a needed for work on an occasional holiday.

Background: US Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain Common Access Card (CAC).
