HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician III to support the Military Malaria Research Program in the Department of Drug Therapy, Experimental Therapeutics at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Drug Therapy, Experimental Therapeutics.

Responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with experiments and to provide support in various areas as needed. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains cell cultures to support drug efficacy and toxicity: to include reagent processing/preparation, slide preparation, cryopreservation, and using equipment (ex. microscope or flow cytometer) to determine cell counts.
  2. Aids in the dissection of mosquitoes for isolation of malaria sporozoites.
  3. Perform all aspects to support in vitro anti-microbial assays.
  4. Maintains accurate records and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all associated assays.
  5. Create and maintain a databases for all data collected.
  6. Organize, analyze, and report data to Lab Manager for distribution to internal and external collaborators.
  7. Ensure proper use and maintenance of all lab equipment.
  8. Maintain a proper chemical inventory of all lab reagents as well as an up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) folder.
  9. Make certain that lab supplies are fully stocked and re-ordered as necessary.
  10. Understand and follow all established lab safety procedures.
  11. Weekend and/or holiday work will be required (shared responsibility)
  12. Train visiting scientists and new laboratory members on experimental protocols, as required.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Technical knowledge of anti-microbial scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal. An In Vitro Lab Technician is preferred for this role.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associate’s degree; Bachelor’s preferred.

Minimum Experience:  4 to 6 years

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals; requires long periods of standing or sitting

Work Environment:  Laboratory and office environment

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
