HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics Department (APG) located at the Uniform Services University (USU) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to APG.

The incumbent will support Dr. Ander’s USU Pain Research Grant, APG-70-9649. Responsibilities are to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with experiments and to provide support in various areas as needed.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with rat surgery, behavioral testing, functional analysis, euthanasia and tissue dissection.
  2. Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data. 
  3. Uses computer for data analysis. 
  4. Prepares tissue for histology and immunohistochemistry which includes cutting tissue on a cryostat and mounting tissue on slides.
  5. Performs immunohistochemistry.
  6. Assists with electrophysiological recordings.
  7. Assists with laser irradiation treatments.
  8. Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines; knowledge of and skill in tissue culture technique and handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal;

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor Degree

Minimum Experience:  0 to 2 years experience

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals and laser equipment; requires periods of standing.

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment
