HJF is seeking a Biostatistician to support the work of the Injury Prevention Research Laboratory (IPRL) within the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) at the Uniformed Services University, the nation’s military medical school. The Injury Prevention Research Laboratory focuses on evidence-based research to guide the development of injury prediction and prevention programs for musculoskeletal injury in military populations. The candidate will provide advanced statistical consulting and data analysis support for several large research projects specifically targeted in these areas. Prior data analysis experience in a similar research field is strongly desired.


  1. Assisting in preparing research proposals and grant applications, including advising researchers on study design and choice of appropriate statistical methods, and drafting data analytic plans.
  2. Conducting statistical analyses using existing databases to address formulated research questions.
  3. Using computer software for data storage, cleaning, merging, and manipulation, as well as data analysis and generation of figures and tables.
  4. Assisting with data logistics planning and the development and management of project databases.
  5. Advising researchers on the application, interpretation, and reporting of statistical methods.
  6. Preparing abstracts, reports, and peer-reviewed research publications using data from existing databases.
  7. Other specific duties as requested by primary investigators, in accordance to general standards and skill base for Biostatisticians.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of database management, statistical analyses, and study design.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis techniques, independently, and in collaboration with study investigators, to answer clinical research questions related to ongoing research projects.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks in order to meet timelines and deadlines.
  • Must be organized, very flexible and able to work under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently.
  • Proficiency with statistical software packages such as STATA, SAS, R, and/or SPSS.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and people skills are required.
  • Prior data analysis experience in sports medicine, exercise science or similar health-related research field is desired.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related field.

Minimum Experience: At least 3 years of data analysis and/or statistical consulting experience. Experience in scientific and/or medical fields is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: The incumbent works under the direction of the CHAMP Director/Principal Investigator who determines objectives and the nature of desired results and gives advice on work in progress. Work will be reviewed by the site director and other investigators engaged in study. Work is reviewed for application of research methods and practices in achieving results and adherence to research protocols.

Work Environment: Must be able to travel to and from multiple field sites.
