HJF is seeking a Research Physical Therapist Assistant for the Department of Pain Management located at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC), Tacoma, Washington. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MAMC.


  • Assist in screening patients to determine their ability to safely participate in clinical studies.
  • Instruct and lead patients through rehabilitation protocols.
  •  Collect clinical research data on the patient's performance and progress to include the documenting in the patient’s medical records.
  • Monitor and ensure patient safety during all collection procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of study progress reports.
  • Maintain a collaborative research environment between the Principal Investigator (PI), other site personnel, research participants, and the funding organization.
  • Collect and process research study data.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in peer-review and training to maintain clinical status.
  • Document correspondence and communication pertinent to the research.
  •  Maintain the security and confidentiality of all clinical and research records.
  • Perform duties necessary to comply with and implement research study protocols.
  • Participate in professional development and training to maintain PTA licensure and fulfill all regulatory requirements for human clinical research as applicable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor; Knowledge of clinical or general research techniques is required; Experience in or exposure to research in a clinical setting is preferred; Experience with amputee care is desirable; Familiarity and experience with research design, data collection and computerized systems, and experience with laboratory management and administrative activities highly preferred; Ability to learn new software quickly, trouble-shoot computer related issues, and provide a high attention to detail; Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication; Must be flexible with changing priorities and able to communicate in a diplomatic and professional manner; Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Microsoft Office Software including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associates degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program and certification/licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant is very strongly preferred. Formal military training and experience may be considered in lieu of certification/licensure.  CITI certification required within first 30 days of hire.

Minimum Experience:  Two to four years’ experience in physical therapy preferred, with some experience in orthopedics.

Physical Capabilities:  Work requires prolonged periods of sitting or activity and limited lifting of objects up to 25 lbs.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  The Incumbent works under the supervision of the local Henry M. Jackson Foundation supervisor and under the direction of the director of the Military Performance Laboratory to achieve contracted objectives.  Technical and procedural problems and plans relating to accomplishment of assigned tasks are resolved independently or through consultation with clinic or lab personnel.

Work Environment:  The work environment is that of an outpatient clinic or clinical research laboratory located in a military treatment facility.  Work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning.
