HJF is seeking a Molecular Biologist to support the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-D) located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH in Dayton, Ohio.  HJF Provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NAMRU-D.  Responsibilities are to provide Environmental Health Effects Laboratory support.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Work with a diverse team of scientists, including toxicologists, engineers, neuroscientists, chemists, psychologists, animal behaviorists and biologists, to accomplish the mission of understanding the health effects of operating in military settings.
  2. Design and conduct scientific research on the responses to exposure to chemicals/mixtures, extreme environmental hazards or stressors, to include temperature, humidity, altitude, vibrations, and noise, and/or physical demand.
  3. Design and execute microbiological research on the responses and contributions of the microbiome to the health effects and physiological responses to exposure by chemicals and environmental stressors.
  4. Develop research approaches and strategies for microbiome studies, particularly with regard to the lung and gut, and how the microbiome changes and/or contributes to physiology.
  5. Utilize in vitro multicellular tissue models to understand the impacts, changes to, and physiological contributions of the microbiome following environmental insult.
  6. Assist other investigators in the design and execution of research protocols on animal, human and cellular physiology and performance issues of interest to the Navy.
  7. Assist and educate entry level research assistant personnel in the understanding and performance of their duties.
  8. Collect data from cell and tissue models, and animal subjects (as appropriate).
  9. Operate and maintain standard and specialized laboratory equipment.
  10. Perform statistical analyses such as T-tests, Chi-Square, Analyses of Variance, Multivariate Analyses of Variance, analyses of covariance, multivariate analyses of covariance, correlations, linear regressions, multiple linear regressions, and power analyses. 
  11. Use multiple computer software packages to create spreadsheets and perform statistical routines.
  12. Assist in the preparation of proposal applications for other toxicological, physiological, psychological, medical, and performance studies.
  13. Assist in the development of technical reports, presentations, and publications.
  14. Supervise Research Assistants as needed
  15. Perform other duties as needed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

The Molecular Biologist/Microbiologist has experience with gut and lung microbiome techniques, genetic manipulation and data analyses (16S rRNA, culture, permeability analyses) and skilled with molecular analysis (e.g., design of multiplex assays, PCR, flow cytometry). Strong background performing mammalian cell culture (to include stem cells, organoids and physiologically relevant tissue models), and aseptic technique as well as in microbiological research methodology with experience in research methods, design, and statistical analysis in a research setting. Strong background in microbiology, microbiome, cell physiology, cell signaling pathways and translation of models to human physiology and performance. Experience with various microscopy techniques a plus. Strong technical writing background with experience in writing research proposals, standard operating procedures, animal use protocols for approval by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (human use/Institutional Review Board protocols a plus), technical reports, journal articles, and conference papers. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment but also self-motivated and capable of working independently and with others. Proficiency in the use of common statistical analysis software, to include SigmaPlot, SPSS and SAS. Must be willing and able to work nontraditional hours such as evening, nights and some weekends during periods of data collection.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Ph.D. in immunology, microbiology, cell biology or cellular immunology with at least 3 years of experience in molecular biology/microbiology, or a related scientific field

Minimum Experience:  A minimum of three years’ experience conducting original research, including the design and implementation of protocols with cell and animal models, data analysis, and report production.

Physical Capabilities:  Requires long periods of working in a laboratory setting and/or at a computer; may lift materials weighing no more than 30 lbs.

Security Clearance:  This is a Position of Trust.  Must submit to and be able to complete a background investigation.  U.S. citizenship required.

Work Environment:  Office and laboratory environment.
