The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Research Assistant to support the NeuroTrauma Department at the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides administrative and management support to NMRC. 

The Operational Medicine Program in the NeuroTrauma Department focuses on emergent militarily relevant issues that could be immediately deployed onto the battlefield.  Recent efforts have concentrated on elucidating the potential effects of early and prolonged aeromedical transport on combat injured casualties.  The NeuroTrauma Department in combination with the Undersea Medicine Department has the capability (equipment and scientific/technical expertise) to evaluate the effects of long-range aeromedical evacuation at its Center for Hypobaric Experimentation, Simulation and Testing (CHEST) in both large (swine) and small (rats, mice) animals.  In addition, other efforts encompassed in this program evaluate operationally relevant devices and methods for caring for combat casualties either in the field or en route to definitive care. 

The incumbent would provide technical support to investigators for in-vivo studies of traumatic brain injury, polytrauma, and other injury models in accordance with IACUC approved animal protocols in large and small animals. Duties will include performing animal handling, surgical procedures, anesthesia monitoring, blood sample collection and processing, utilization of equipment for physiological data acquisition, data recording and analysis, and intensive post-operative care of experimental animals. Post-operative care will include animal handling, administration of blood and fluids, data collection, euthanasia, necropsy and tissue collection. Additional duties will include entering experimental data into Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel and GraphPad, as well as data processing, laboratory and animal record keeping, and other duties as assigned. Individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, time management, and computer skills. Previous experience with laboratory animals preferred.

  1. Assisting with/or performing surgical and experimental procedures in support of research studies of traumatic injury, hemorrhagic shock and bleeding arrest in swine and rats.
  2. Provide intensive supportive post-operative care to experimental animals including observation, assessment and appropriate experimental treatment in consultation with appropriate veterinary and/or scientific staff.
  3. Performing protocol related technical procedures (i.e. blood sample collection and processing, infusions, monitoring and recording of physiological parameters, euthanasia, tissue collection, etc.)
  4. Experimental data collection and entry into Microsoft Access database and Microsoft Excel, as well as using electronic data collection system.
  5. Data processing using Microsoft Excel or equivalent programs.
  6. Writing and preparation of abstracts, manuscripts and poster and slide presentations.
  7. Laboratory management duties including supply procurement, routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, assure compliance with departmental and facility SOP’s and policies.
  8. Assisting with/or performing basic laboratory procedures (e.g. cell processing, ELISA, FACS, histology, flow cytometry).
  9. Maintain animal behavioral training and enrichment program.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Must have a general working knowledge of common veterinary procedures and laboratory techniques. Experience with animal handling, administration of anesthesia, basic surgical procedures, post-operative care and specimen collection/processing is required. Previous experience with laboratory research animals and an appreciation of animal welfare issues preferred. Computer proficiency including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar is expected. Must demonstrate ability to learn new procedures and to work independently.  Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of team. Must be willing and available to work early mornings, late evenings, occasional overnights, weekends and/or “on-call” shifts.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  BS degree in animal science, biological science (or similar field), or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Experience:  0-2 years of previous experience in a research laboratory or clinical veterinary practice preferred.

Physical Capabilities:  Full ambulatory capacity and ability to handle animals. No known allergies to animals.

Work Environment:  Animal facility and laboratory environment.

Background: Eligibility to obtain Common Access Card (CAC) background.
